FONTANA — Completed forward passes were scarce during the Summit football team’s 20-8 nonleague victory against Barstow on Thursday night at Miller High School. Completed passes of more than 17 yards were even more scarce. There were as many of those (zero) as saber-toothed tigers. But it didn’t matter, as Summit took a 14-0 first-quarter lead and cruised to victory. A punishing ground game and a hard-hitting defense led the SkyHawks. “That quarterback makes a lot of moves, but we ran a lot of spy (putting one man on Barstow’s quarterback Dwayne Williams) and I think we did a good job of keeping him inside the pocket,” Summit defender David Bonilla said. Bonilla’s father played for iconic former coach Dick Bruich at Kaiser High School in Fontana. Williams was indeed a problem. He didn’t complete many passes, but he rushed for 68 yards on 12 carries, 46 more yards than any Aztec rusher. However, Summit’s aggressive defense harassed Williams all game and knocked him out of the contest twice. Offensively, Summit backs Maximus McCarthy (78 yards on 11 carries) and Mark Mitchell III (63 yards on 16 carries) picked up chunks of real estate behind an efficient line. The line consisted of Siaosi Pulu, rotating centers Mosese Afemui and Ivan Arzaluz, Perseus Soto, Joshua Gonzales and Meckael Robinson. “These linemen block great,” said Bonilla, who also plays running back. “They do a great job and they’re really strong.” Summit (5-1) flexed its muscles on its first drive, plowing 44 yards in seven plays and scoring on Mitchell’s 4-yard run for a 7-0 lead. Following a Barstow three-and-out and a short punt, Summit scored again. This time it took just three plays before McCarthy took it across from 15 yards. Just when it looked like a running clock might be in Barstow’s future, the Aztecs clamped down. There was no scoring until 2:33 left in the first half, when Barstow’s Williams managed a rare pass completion, a 2-yard flip for a score to Gavin Hall. The Aztecs added a two-point conversion to move within 14-8. Barstow also recovered an onside kick and took over on the Summit 47. But a big sack by Summit’s George Toia kept Barstow at bay. With Barstow (4-1) so limited offensively (only 43 yards passing), one more Summit score was going to put the game out of reach. That came on Summit’s first drive of the second half, when Mitchell scored on a 5-yard run. That was the SkyHawks’ passing total for the game in a contest Knute Rockne would have loved. “Bonilla must have made about four tackles of the quarterback in open space, when it really mattered,” Summit coach Nick Matheny said. “And Mark Mitchell did what he always does and so did George Toia.” Matheny said putting a “spy” on Williams was important and that the SkyHawks were calling the Aztec quarterback “Michael Vick” all week – a reference to the elusive former quarterback of the Atlanta Falcons. “We knew we were going to miss a couple, and he was going to get loose here and there but we were able to make the crucial tackles, led by Bonilla,” Matheny said.
