Fontana Police officer fatally shoots assault suspect armed with a metal pipe

A Fontana police officer fatally shot a suspect on Tuesday after the man, who was armed with a metal pipe, reportedly attacked a civilian and the officer, the Fontana Police Department said.
Fontana police responded to reports of a man armed with a metal pole just after 2 p.m. on Tuesday, according to a police news release. Police were dispatched to a shopping center parking lot on the 14300 block of Baseline Avenue, near Cherry Avenue, Fontana PD reported on X.
The suspect was reportedly swinging around the metal pipe and causing property damage. The suspect also allegedly assaulted a resident with the weapon, the release said.
Upon arrival, the responding officer located the suspect and attempted to de-escalate the situation, police said. The suspect refused to comply and attacked the officer, who responded with lethal force, the release said.
The suspect was transported to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead. The identity of the suspect was not immediately released.
The police officer involved in the shooting also sustained injuries and was also transported to a hospital.
The San Bernardino County Sheriff’s Department will investigate the lethal use of force.
