PROVIDENCE, R.I. (WLNE) — New surveillance video is providing a look at the moment a 7-year-old girl was shot in Providence in August. Ny’Eil Pires died of her injuries at Hasbro Children’s Hospital days after the shooting, and her father is charged with child endangerment in the case. As the two men charged in her murder sat in court Tuesday, officials showed video of what exactly led up to the deadly shooting. Prosecutors played footage in court that they said shows Pires and 26-year-old Shaheem Nathaniel talking outside of the 7-Eleven convenience store on Manton Avenue, standing between two cars. Nathaniel and 19-year-old Ahmari Cabrera are charged with murder in the case. Shortly after, prosecutors said video shows Nathaniel leave the 7-Eleven, and Pires then getting into his own car with his two kids inside. Additional surveillance video picked up the interaction on Florence Street, where prosecutors said Nathaniel, with 19-year-old Ahmari Cabrera in his car, pulled over on the side of the street. Pires’s car could then be seen pulling in behind them and stopping. It’s unclear from the video what exactly happened next, but, according to prosecutors, Pires suddenly drove his car right at Nathaniel and Cabrera, who ducked out of the way. Gunshots were heard in the neighborhood, and video shows Pires’s car quickly backing away. As Pires’ car turned around and continued up the street, two hooded men, who police said are Nathaniel and Cabrera, followed the car on foot. Video then shows one the two hooded men firing another shot at the car. Nathaniel and Cabrera appeared jointly in court Tuesday, as part of the continuation of a bail hearing, which is set to pick back up Friday, Sept. 27. Both Nathaniel and Cabrera are being held, while Pires’s case is due back in court Thursday, Sept. 26 for a status conference. Categories: News, Providence, Rhode Island
