ASCENSION PARISH, La. (BRPROUD) — A family in Ascension Parish lost their home when Hurricane Francine struck Louisiana just two weeks ago. She, along with many others across the state, is reaching out to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for assistance. Savannah Dardeau, the single mother of a one-year-old and four-year-old, is trying to stay positive after she lost her home on Sept. 11 during Francine. A tree from a neighbor's yard broke in half from the high winds and landed on her roof. “My neighbor's tree fell over the fence and split the house basically in half," said Dardeau. The roof collapsed. She wasn’t home at the time. She and her two children were staying at her parent's house. She lost most of her things but was able to salvage some of the children's clothing. FEMA gives Louisiana over $206M for flood prevention plans "All their clothes I was able to save, thank goodness. It's just the furniture and like, half of my clothes we’re ruined," said Dardeau. A family friend has started a GoFundMe. “There's a lot to do. She's got these little kids, she's a fantastic mother, she's going to school, she's got six months left," said Paulette Hendricksen, organizer of the GoFundMe. Dardeau says she applied for disaster assistance from FEMA this week. FEMA told BRProud that they have given out $7 million in disaster assistance since last week to homeowners and renters in eight parishes, including Ascension. “Our mission is to make sure that they have a way to start the recovery, so that starts obviously with immediate needs, making sure people are again a safe place to stay for them to get back to work, school," said Roberto Baltodano, FEMA external affairs officer. Her faith is strong, and she knows help is on the way. “This is my bible I kept by my bed," said Dardeau.
