FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) - A beloved series of three-inch tall figurines, going viral on social media, made a definite impact in Fresno this past weekend. The figurines are known as the Sonny Angels. They depict the central character "Sonny Angel" - described as a "cute and angelic little boy who wears all sorts of different headgear" and can be placed "anywhere you want to see his cute smile." Fire-ravaged Fresno businesses get help from neighbors On Saturday, the Sonny Angels were finally on the shelves of Fresno's Sour Milk gift shop, creating a long line of people waiting for hours along Van Ness Boulevard in the Tower District hoping to buy one of them. Customers lined up as early as 8 a.m. to get a hold of their own Sonny Angels: four hours before Sour Milk opened its doors. Belen Torres was one of the first people waiting in line. She says as soon as she saw the Sonny Angels on social media she was hooked. "They're just super cute," Torres said. "I think once I saw them I've been wanting to get my hands on them." According to Torres, getting a hold of a Sonny Angel is not easy. She says Sonny Angels are not found in many California stores; in fact, companies have to apply for a license to sell the Sonny Angels. Sour Milk Store co-owner Ryan Urquidez confirmed that the gift shop had to apply to sell the Sonny Angels - and then wait for some time before a shipment of the figurines arrived. "We applied a while ago and finally got access to start carrying them within like the last year," Urquidez said. "Since then, like every time we have these drops, the line just gets longer and longer." Urquidez says he does not understand the appeal of the Sonny Angels but, as a collector, he does understand what drives his customers to wait for hours in the sun for a chance to get their own figurine. Urquidez says customers were made aware of the shop's supply about a week in advance - and told they were not guaranteed a Sonny Angel. That didn't stop artist Magi Alex Lopez from adding to her already large collection. "My friend got me into them," Lopez said, "At first I thought they were weird because they're naked babies. But my friend bought me one for the first time and after the first I got addicted." Lopez went as far as to paint her own Sonny Angels and get involved in the fandom. According to the official Sonny Angel website, the figurines were created 20 years ago and meant to "bring happiness." Although not all Sour Milk customers got a hold of a Sonny Angel, Urquidez made sure everyone who waited in line was given water as they waited. For those who missed out this time, Sour Milk says it will keep patrons updated on their future Sonny Angel supply.
