BRAINTREE, Mass. (WWLP) - There is an update on the death of a Massachusetts State Police recruit after he was injured at the training academy. Hampden County Sheriff Nick Cocchi arrested for OUI at MGM Springfield State Police officials are now saying that they've suspended full-contact boxing training activities. Trooper Enrique Delgado-Garcia was sworn in as an officer in the last hours of his life. He died in the hospital, one day after being injured during a boxing training exercise. The DA’s office says he was hit in the head which knocked him out for 10 minutes. A representative from the Massachusett State Police says that Interim Colonel John Mawn requested a full investigation on the day of the incident. Now, he's urging the Worcester County District Attorney's Office to find an independent investigator as soon as possible. Colonel Mawn has also ordered an internal investigation of the academy's defensive tactics program. Delgado-Garcia was part of the 90th Recruit Training Troop, which is due to graduate on October 9th at the DCU Center in Worcester. Before entering the academy, he worked at the DA’s office for 18 months as a victim’s witness advocate. 22News confirmed that he was a graduate of Westfield State University.
