BOSTON (WWLP) - A bipartisan group of senators sent a letter to the Attorney General calling for a special investigation into a Massachusetts State Police recruit's death at the academy. The recruit, Enrique Delgado-Garcia, died on September 13th, a day after being critically injured in a boxing training exercise at the Massachusetts State Police Academy in New Braintree. The senators--including Senator Peter Durant who represents Ware--called for the investigation to be handled by a Conflict Special Assistant Attorney General. They say this special investigation will allow for a more "comprehensive and independent" picture of what happened to Delgado-Garcia and what changes can be made to prevent recruit deaths in the future. A fellow police recruit who knew Delgado-Garcia has spoken out about the alleged bullying and harassment he endured while at the academy. The recruit said he does not understand how Delgado-Garcia could have been fatally injured in boxing--a concern his family has also publicly shared. "This incident is the latest in long series of issues for the State Police," read the letter sent by Senators Durant, Moore, and Kennedy, "The recent history of the State Police, other allegations of harassment at the State Police Academy and this incident warrant this response." The letter also requested that any findings from the investigation or resulting policy changes in the state police be made available to the public. Following the letter's release, on Monday afternoon the Attorney General named Attorney David Meier as the independent investigator. Delgado-Garcia was a 2022 graduate of Westfield State University. His funeral services are scheduled for next Saturday in Worcester.
