Just after midnight on Sunday, officers saw a vehicle speeding westbound on Central near downtown, at one point being clocked at 140 mph. Officers attempted to stop the driver multiple times before deploying a spike strip. The driver kept fleeing until his damaged tires forced him to stop. That same day, APD tracked a vehicle after it fled from a traffic stop. APD air support followed the driver to the University of New Mexico Hospital parking garage. [2] NM CYFD considers rule changes to broaden hiring pool - A proposed rule change would broaden the hiring pool within CYFD. If passed, the rule would change language on background checks and employment history verification. The change would eliminate a provision that automatically disqualifies candidates with misdemeanor convictions related to providing a safe and morally positive environment for children. CYFD clarified that candidates with felony convictions would still be excluded from consideration. The public will have an opportunity to weigh in on the proposed rule change at a hearing scheduled for October 24. [3] Higher temperatures return & dry weather remains - Despite the slightly cooler-than-normal start for many, conditions will warm up to above-normal by the afternoon. [4] Officials: Albuquerque speed cameras effective in slowing drivers down - The City of Albuquerque said data shows its speed cameras are making the streets safer. New data indicates the number of drivers going ten miles-per-hour or more over the speed limit, has dropped by 42% to 90% depending on the camera. Over 223,000 violations have been issued since the program started. The city says it plans to add at least 20 more cameras starting next year. [5] NM scientists research how nuclear blasts can protect Earth from asteroids - Scientists at Sandia National Labs are researching how to deflect an asteroid headed our way. Scientists created experiments using Sandia’s Z machine to monitor the deflection of synthetic asteroids subjected to powerful X-ray pulses generated by the machine. They said the goal of the research is to track the reactions of asteroids to deflection attempts.
