BISMARCK, N.D. (KXNET) — Two people are now facing felony charges after investigators say they found illegal goods inside one man's jail cell. Investigators say the event took place at the North Dakota State Penitentiary in May of last year.Corrections officers searched the cell of Paul Cavanaugh and say they found a cell phone, a screwdriver, and chewing tobacco. They believe the screwdriver was to be used to remove light fixtures in the prison so illegal goods could be hidden. North Dakota Crime Tracker 2024 North Dakota Highway Patrol troopers also spoke with Katie Fields, who was formerly a corrections officer at the penitentiary. She admitted to being in a relationship with Cavanaugh, and said she'd delivered him the items. A spokesperson for the North Dakota Department of Corrections and Rehabilitation tells KX News that Fields was placed on leave in May of last year while she was under investigation.She then resigned on June 5th, 2023, and now faces six felony charges — which include Delivery of a Controlled Substance, a Weapon, and an Electronic Device to an Inmate. Both Cavanaugh and Fields had two counts of Conspiracy dismissed, and Fields now faces two felony charges in Burleigh County court. His trial is scheduled to happen on January 15th, 2025.
