Carson City School District The Carson High School Navy Junior Reserve Officers Training Corps (NJROTC) cadets deepened their understanding of naval operations and the daily sway of Navy life by touring the USS Sterett (DDG 104) in San Diego earlier this month. Recently declared as the CHS NJROTC sponsor, the Sterett presents cadets in the land-locked state Nevada with a naval vessel to anchor with and visit to learn more about the Navy. The USS Sterett (DDG 104) is a Flight IIA Arleigh Burke-class guided-missile destroyer of the United States Navy. During the tour of the ship, cadets were introduced to the Navy’s advanced systems and weaponry. After the tour, cadets witnessed a change of command ceremony and watched as their unit flag with the iconic Senator Man was hoisted up the main mast. The NJROTC program aims to teach high school students the values of citizenship, leadership, character and community service, while also providing a foundation for future careers in the military or other fields. The program is offered in more than 600 high schools across the United States, and the NJROTC Area Managers visit each unit once a year to conduct inspections. Finally, CHS NJROTC has an opening for an instructor. The school is looking for individuals who have served in either the U.S. Marine Corps or the U.S. Navy to join this high-achieving team. NJROTC instructors work with CHS students in a respectful and rewarding environment passing on knowledge and experiences to develop effective leaders.
