SAN DIEGO (FOX 5/KUSI) -- A memorial service is underway for San Diego Police Officer Austin Machitar, who lost his life in the line of duty last month. He was killed in a Clairemont crash following a high-speed pursuit. The memorial service follows a procession that began on Interstate 15 and headed southbound to the Interstate 8 eastbound transition. It then exited onto Greenfield Drive in the city of El Cajon. Temporary freeway closures were in place until 8:45 a.m. All lanes have since reopened to traffic. The memorial service, which is open to the public, is being held at the Shadow Mountain Community Church, located at 2100 Greenfield Dr. in El Cajon. RELATED: San Diego police identify officer killed in crash A tribute to Officer Machitar According to the San Diego Officers Association, Officer Machitar, age 30, was a San Diego County native who grew up in Chula Vista. He joined the San Diego Police Department in March 2019, making him a five-and-a-half year veteran of the department. Officer Machitar was assigned to the SDPD’s Northern Division. "He was the face of many San Diego Police recruitment materials and flyers, showcasing his welcoming smile in photos and fun personality in videos," the Officers Association noted in a tribute. "In this time of grief, we honor the memory of a hero who gave everything for our safety. His integrity, dedication and heroism will never be forgotten. Our thoughts and prayers remain with his family and loved ones." Officer Austin Machitar, 30, of San Diego, was a five-and-a-half year veteran of the department and was killed in an on-duty collision. (SDPD) Officer Machitar is survived by his parents and sister.
