COLUMBUS, Ohio (WCMH) -- Orlando City SC battled the Columbus Crew in a lively game at home, ending in a 4-3 victory for Columbus. Fans who frequent Lower.com Field may have noticed the lack of pyrotechnics igniting the match, per Franklin County's open burn ban. Sparks still flew, however, in a back-and-forth match between two leading Eastern Conference teams, with the Crew hoping to jump rival FC Cincinnati into second and Orlando slipping behind the New York Red Bulls into fifth with tonight's loss. Things began in Columbus' favor, but Orlando's potential for a come back is not lost on the Crew. In the Sept. 16, 2023 meeting between the two teams, Orlando persevered, coming back from a 3-1 match and scoring three more after the 72nd minute for a 4-3 victory. Points started with Diego Rossi's goal at the 29th minute, through two defenders and just too far into the right of the goal for Orlando goaltender Pedro Gallese to reach with his dive. This marked Rossi's third goal against Orlando this season, as he scored both goals in the teams' last meeting on May 25, favoring the Crew 2-0. Big plays lift Buckeyes to 49-14 win over Marshall Rossi only played the first half, with MLS MVP contender Cucho Hernandez leaving the bench. With tonight's game, Hernandez has secured 92 goal contributions in his last 51 games. Crew forward Christian Ramirez secured a 2-0 lead in the 50th minute with a well-timed header off Max Arfsten's cross to goal. Arfsten helped bring a third goal 20 minutes later, assisting Hernandez with a clean pass to his right foot. Orlando did not surrender to Columbus' lead, securing their own goal in the 75th. The Lions' Ivan Angulo drew Crew goaltender Patrick Schulte toward his attempt, which hit the post and left the net open for Ramiro Enrique' to follow through. Just two minutes later, striker Luis Muriel brought Orlando back within the realm of victory with a successful penalty kick from in the box. Columbus responded in minute 84, when a pass from Hernandez set up Aziel Jackson's first goal as a member of the Crew to bring the yellow and gold out of potentially dangerous territory. But Muriel responded again in second-half stoppage time, tightening the gap at the end before a 4-3 win. Columbus is preparing for Campeones Cup this Wednesday where the Crew will take on Club America at 7:30 p.m. in Columbus. The annual matchup pairs the reigning MLS and Liga MX champions to battle for North American supremacy.
