A hot end to this summer season
Sep 21, 2024
AUSTIN (KXAN) -- Today is the final day of astronomical summer. The autumnal equinox happens at 7:43 Sunday morning.
Clouds increased over the area overnight. They'll stick around for a few hours before clearing to a partly cloudy to mostly sunny sky this afternoon.
Highs will be above normal with most locations reaching the upper half of the 90s. The record high today at Camp Mabry is 100° set in 1926.
The normal high for September 21st is 90°
The Horns entertain Louisiana-Monroe at 7 p.m. The game starts with hot air although the humidity will be low.
Hot with low humidity at kickoff
The forecast continues to dry for the weekend. Highs Sunday will be a few degrees lower with most in the low to mid 90s.
The latest heat dome will be dominant for two more days before departing off to the east. An upper-level low currently over the desert southwest will open up into a trough and head to the middle of the country. The trough may trigger a few showers Monday.
Rain remains a part of the forecast Tuesday through Thursday. Showers and a few thunderstorms are greatest in number Tuesday night to Wednesday with a 30% chance during each time period.
Mid-week showers and thunderstorms
Rain chances lower to 20% Thursday morning. Friday will be dry. Present indications show rain totals averaging .10" to .25". There are a few locations in the Hill Country that may pick up anywhere from .33" to .50".
Temperatures during the week will average the upper 80s to low 90s.
Afternoon highs still above normal much of the next 7 days
Tracking the Tropics
A broad area of low pressure has potential to become further organized in the Caribbean into next week. Chances for development are now up to 60%.
Tropical potential over the next week (NHC)
It's still too early to determine where any potential storm would end up. Once a closed area of low pressure develops, then our forecast models will have a better time with a track.
