(KRON) -- Martial arts and film icon Bruce Lee will be honored by the city where he began his career next week. On Monday, the City of Oakland will honor the late Lee with a commemorative street renaming ceremony at the intersection of Broadway and Garnet Street. The location is close to where Lee once ran a martial arts school he co-founded with Jimmy Yung Lee (no relation). At the school, Lee began pioneering his distinct, signature style of martials arts, Jeet Kune Do -- which means "way of the intercepting fist." Notable students at Lee's Oakland studio included NBA icon Kareem Abdul Jabbar and future Oakland Mayor Ron Dellums. Cisco layoffs to impact hundreds of Bay Area workers A resolution to rename the intersection after Lee was introduced by Oakland City Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan in June and was unanimously passed. Lee was born across the Bay from Oakland in San Francisco's Chinatown. He grew up in Hong Kong where he began training in martial arts. He later relocated back to the United States, teaching martial arts in Seattle, Oakland and San Francisco, before heading to Los Angeles. In LA, his martial arts talents caught the attention of Hollywood. He landed a part as Kato on "The Green Hornet" television series along with several other bit parts. Frustrated by his inability to break through what he regarded as Hollywood's stereotype about Asian actors, he returned to Hong Kong and began starring in and directing films. Following a series of hits in the Hong Kong market including "The Big Boss," "Return of the Dragon," and "Fists of Fury," he again caught the attention of Hollywood. The resulting film, "Enter the Dragon," would go on to launch Lee as the first martial arts global superstar. Sadly, Lee would not live to see the film's release. He died at age 32 due to a cerebral edema he suffered while recording dialogue for the film ahead of its release.
