WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) -- One in seven Kansans is food insecure, which is 70,000 people in Sedgwick County alone. The Kansas Food Bank has devised a new way to combat hunger by working with Wichita restaurants. "It's really going to be a week that supports obviously the Kansas Food Bank and our food-insecure neighbors," Kate Birkhofer at the Kansas Food Bank said. "It's something that's obviously really important to us, but it's also celebrating the amazing businesses that make Wichita so special. We're really excited about this week, kind of coming together with everybody over our shared love of food." ICT Restaurant Week includes over 20 restaurants at over 40 locations. Each restaurant is donating some of its proceeds Sept. 22-28. Different places are using different methods. Some are donating a percentage, others are featuring signature menu items and others are asking customers to round up, then they will match that. Customers also benefit. They can download the mobile passport, earn points, and be entered to win prizes. "They can go, and they can redeem those points for different entries into contests that we have for some really cool experiences, like dinner for two at FioRito, dinner for two at First Mile, and then gift cards to a bunch of different ICT Restaurant Week spots, some Dillons coupons and all kinds of good stuff," Birkhoffer said. September is Hunger Action Month, and Birkhofer says this is a way to engage the community. By participating in Restaurant Week, every dollar that is raised through the event will help us provide for meals for food insecure Kansans," Birkhofer said. "So it's really an opportunity for everybody to come together and by everybody giving a little bit, we can really make a big difference." Moka's is one of the restaurants participating. "We're really excited to be a part of this initiative," Erik Clark with Mokas said. "Anytime that we are a part of an initiative that concentrates on connection and generosity, that's one of the things that at JRI hospitality and Mokas that we look to do. So we're looking forward to giving back to the Kansas Food Bank, and it's something that we feel pretty passionate about."
