(DURANGO, Colo.) — Colorado Parks and Wildlife (CPW) recently relocated a black bear described as an "absolute unit" and a "chonk" from under a neighbor's deck in Durango. CPW said wildlife officers responded on Thursday, Sept. 19 to a home on the west side of Durango after the homeowner reported a large bear had growled and huffed at him from beneath his deck when he walked down the deck stairs. CPW said this particular boar (a male bear) had been seen around Durango frequently over the summer, getting into trash and fruit trees. However, the bear seemed fond of his hangout spot beneath this particular deck. The bear had not returned to the deck in several weeks, but made his presence known on Thursday. CPW said the homeowner did the right thing by calling its Durango office. It took two darts to get the massive bear to take a little nap, and then the real work of pulling him out from under the deck began. A winch had to be used to load the "chonk" into the trap, and once loaded, officers gave the bear a quick health exam, to include a tooth check for estimating his age, before administering a reversal drug. "It didn't take long for the bear to wake back up and continue to impress our staff with its sheer size. An absolute unit," CPW said. Watch CPW District Wildlife Manager Luke Clancy release the bear into his new habitat: CPW said the relocation was necessary due to several reported conflicts with this specific bear in Durango over the summer, and because "under a deck is not place for a bear to continually set up shop." This close to denning season, CPW said it was vital that the bear find a much more suitable den. CPW reminds neighbors that bears are in "hyperphagia"--trying to consume as many as 20,000 calories a day to prepare for hibernation. CPW said it is critical that people remove attractants such as unsecured trash and fallen fruit from neighborhoods to prevent lurking bears. You can learn more about hyperphagia and how to prevent bear encounters on CPW's website. As for the "chonk" that was relocated Thursday, CPW said its staff took guesses on the weight of the bear, and a consensus was reached at about 450 pounds! Some officers even speculated it could be higher. "Now in better habitat with strong natural food availability, we are left to only wonder how much bigger it will get this fall," said CPW. "But that's an answer we hope to never know."
