BOSTON (SHNS) - Two correction officers were stabbed and three others were also injured at the Souza-Baranowski Correctional Center in Shirley on Wednesday evening and the Department of Correction said it has "modified operations" at the maximum-security facility to ensure the safety of officers and the roughly 885 people incarcerated there. DOC said it received a report of multiple injured correction officers at the prison around 6:20 p.m. Wednesday. Massachusetts State Police investigators and the MSP's Crime Scene Response Unit also responded to the facility Wednesday evening. "Two correction officers were assaulted by incarcerated individuals and sustained multiple stab wounds. Three additional correction officers were injured when responding to the incident. A total of 5 correction officers were transported to nearby hospitals for medical treatment," DOC said in an update Thursday. "Four correction officers have been treated and released from the hospital, while one correction officer remains hospitalized and is being treated for non-life threatening injuries." The inmates that DOC said have been "identified to be involved in this incident" were transferred to other facilities and DOC said it is undertaking both a comprehensive investigation to determine the facts and circumstances and a full security assessment. DOC did not provide details of the incident, but Dennis Martin, president of the Massachusetts Correction Officers Federated Union, said at a press conference taped by Boston 25 that "this was attempted murder," adding that one officer was stabbed 12 times. Interim DOC Commissioner Shawn Jenkins said correction officers perform "an essential and difficult job" and said he is "deeply concerned" about the incident. "My thoughts are with the officers and their families at this time and the Department offers our full support to the officers as they recover from their injuries.  Violence against DOC staff is unacceptable, and we will take the steps necessary to ensure those responsible are held accountable under the law," Jenkins said. "Our Department will also conduct a thorough security assessment and review of protocols to ensure the safety and security of all who work and live at our facilities." Republicans Sen. Peter Durant and Rep. Michael Soter issued a press release Thursday calling for an investigation and "accountability in the Department of Correction" in the aftermath of Wednesday evening's violence. "I am outraged that we are here, again, after legislators have been begging for a thorough investigation into why these incidents continue and what steps have been taken to prevent them," Soter said, referring to letters lawmakers sent former DOC Commissioner Carol Mici last year. “We cannot wait until there is a loss of life before we address this problem."
