With the Yankees in need of a 40-man roster spot, the team designated Ron Marinaccio for assignment on Friday. The move came as a bit of a surprise, as Marinaccio showed promise in 2022 when he recorded a 2.05 ERA over 44 innings as a rookie. The 29-year-old, frequently optioned reliever is also under team control until 2029. However, Marinaccio has not made the most of his major league opportunities since 2022, recording a 3.95 ERA over 70.2 innings from 2023-2024. While he had a 2.04 ERA over 39.2 innings at Triple-A this season, the righty had a 6.75 ERA in his last seven big league games for the Yankees. Marinaccio, a Toms River, New Jersey native, had a 3.86 ERA in 16 total MLB games this season. The Yankees needed to clear a 40-man roster spot because Cody Poteet‘s rehab assignment came to an end. The right-hander, sidelined since Aug. 1 with a triceps strain, was reinstated from the 60-day IL and optioned to Triple-A. Poteet has been a serviceable rotation fill-in for the Yankees this season, recording a 2.14 ERA over four starts and 21 innings. He has a 3.40 ERA over 13 starts between Double-A and Triple-A.
