San Diego’s General Dynamics-NASSCO will build a Navy fuel ship that will bear the name of labor and civil rights leader Dolores Huerta, who has visited San Diego County many times over the years to deliver talks. “Dolores Huerta dedicated her life to caring for those voiceless and underrepresented — she dedicated her life to taking care of people,” Navy Secretary Carlos Del Toro said in a statement. He announced the ship naming earlier this week. The USNS Dolores Huerta will become one of at least 17 John Lewis-class fleet oilers that NASSCO has built or plans to build for the Navy. The 742-foot vessels travel around the world to fuel ships, frequently doing so at sea. The newest of them, the USNS Lucy Stone, is being christened at NASSCO on Saturday morning. Huerta and Cesar Chavez co-founded the United Farm Workers of America, a union that became famous for its work improving the wages and working conditions of migrant farmworkers. Huerta, who is 94, also is known for broadly contributing to the Chicano civil rights movement.
