The Montgomery Historic Preservation Commission’s annual Cemetery Walk will begin at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 2, at Riverside Cemetery at 414 N. River St. in Montgomery. At the free event, guests will be led through the cemetery on a tour to meet early Montgomery settlers and other cemetery residents who will be portrayed by volunteers, event organizers said. This year’s event will spotlight a 19th century businessman, an Aurora firefighter, a young girl and her father, and an upholstery store owner. Visitors are welcome to arrive any time between 7 and 8 p.m., organizers said. Tours will begin at the corner of River and Taylor streets on the southeast side of the cemetery about every 10 minutes. Parking is available along River Street near Montgomery Park, officials said. Visitors should bring a flashlight and wear sturdy shoes. Dieterle Memorial Home, which owns and maintains Riverside Cemetery, will provide complimentary refreshments at the event, organizers said. Fundraiser aims to help fight hunger The Chicago Woodturners and the Windy City Woodturners will hold a fundraiser from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 12, at the Boardwalk Shops in Batavia to help groups that fight hunger in the Fox Valley. Volunteer members of both woodturning clubs will be selling donated bowls and other wood-turned items at an outdoor pop-up market at the Boardwalk Shops at Wilson Street and Route 25. Proceeds from the event will go to the Northern Illinois Food Bank, the Batavia Interfaith Food Pantry and the Fox Valley Food for Health organizations. The pop-up shop will feature wooden, hand-crafted items produced by local artisans, according to a press release about the event. Business owners at the Batavia Boardwalk Shops are also participating in the Empty Bowls event by collecting canned goods and other food pantry staples. All customers who bring food pantry items to the fundraiser or make a purchase at any of the Boardwalk Shops on Oct. 12 will be eligible to win a gift basket filled with items donated by the Boardwalk Shops, according to the release. Harvest Festival scheduled in Aurora The Kane County Forest Preserve District will hold its Harvest Festival celebrating autumn from noon to 3 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 29, at Oakhurst Forest Preserve, 1680 Fifth Ave. in Aurora. At the event, participants can paint pumpkins, take a mule-drawn hayride, play games, create nature crafts and enjoy live folk music and seasonal treats, event organizers said. No registration is required, and admission is free, however there is a fee for crafts, hayrides and refreshments. The event is cash only, district officials said. Jazz performance set at St. Charles Library Award-winning composer and pianist Matt Peterson will perform works from his new jazz album “Better Worlds” during a free show at 2 p.m. Sunday, Oct. 6, at St. Charles Public Library, 1 S. The album features 10 original compositions in addition to a unique arrangement of the Beatles’ “Blackbird,” and is a blend of traditional and modern jazz, with influences from funk, blues and classical styles, library officials said. Peterson is an accompanist at the Joffrey Ballet in Chicago and a private lesson instructor as well as an in-demand classical and jazz performer in the Chicago area, officials said. Trivia night to raise funds to eradicate polio The Rotary Club of Batavia will sponsor a trivia night to help raise money to fight polio on Saturday, Oct. 19, at Enticing Cuisine, 1117 N. Washington in Batavia. The Rotary Club of Batavia has been steadfast in its commitment to eradicating this disease through fundraising efforts, club officials said. Over the past two years alone, the club has raised over $50,000, which directly supports the purchase and distribution of polio vaccines to vulnerable communities, club officials said. The event will begin at 6 p.m. The $60 per person ticket includes participation in the trivia competition, heavy appetizers, a drink ticket, cash bar and more, officials said. Members sought for Kaneland Foundation Kaneland Community School District 302 is looking to add members to the Kaneland Foundation, a non-profit organization that contributes to the educational needs of Kaneland students. The foundation’s mission is to support academic excellence through innovation, Kaneland officials said. Foundation directors meet several times during the school year and plan and host fundraising events. In preparing to add members to the foundation, the selection committee will seek varied representation based on the Kaneland community, according to a press release about the search for new members.
