HAGERSTOWN, Md. (DC News Now) -- More than 1,000 volunteers took a break from work today for the annual Washington County Day of Caring. The event is organized by the United Way of Washington County and is devoted to helping the homebound, the hungry and the many nonprofits serving them. "These projects benefit the elderly and low-income and those with barriers, physical limitation," explained Heather Guessford, president and CEO of the United Way of Washington County. Hagerstown mayoral race draws write-in candidate Mechanics and technicians at Subaru of Hagerstown volunteered to service the cars used by nonprofits in Washington County. "We did oil changes and tire rotations and replaced wiper blades, adjusted brakes," Anthony Schifano with Subaru of Hagerstown said. "Anything that was needed to keep these vehicles for the nonprofits serving the community. We have been more than happy to do this for these organizations." The United Way of Washington County takes on more than 7,000 community service projects in the course of a year.
