(KRON) -- On Thursday, University of California regents heard five UC campuses asking for approval to increase military equipment for their police departments. This comes on the heels of protests and large encampments swarming campuses last year in response the Israel-Hamas war. The ask for military equipment from schools includes drones, projectiles, thousands of rounds of pepper powder balls and a kinetic breaching tool for forced entry. During UC Berkeley's last school year, encampments grew for months on Sproul Hall with protestors calling for an end to the Israel-Hamas war. At times, protests got physical with UC Berkeley police stepping in. Stanford University bans overnight encampments in new ‘Freedom of Expression’ guidelines Campus police also dealt with violence over the planned construction at People's Park. Other campuses, including UCLA, also had protest and encampment issues requiring police to step in to keep the peace and protect the student body. Now, campus police departments are asking UC Regents for an upgraded arsenal to help cope with violence. In addition to drones, bomb robots, and pepper spray, police are asking for portable speakers. Students speaking at the UC Regents meeting say it has been a challenging time on campus during these conflicts. Police are asking to purchase 3,000 rounds of pepper ball projectiles, which are considered non-lethal, plus launchers. Under state law, the campuses must get approval to purchase such weapons. A UC spokesperson said the tools are meant to provide officers with the ability to deescalate or overcome self-destructive, dangerous or combative individuals without having to resort to deadly force.
