JOHNSTON, R.I. (WLNE) — Operation Stand Down Rhode Island held a veterans outreach event in Johnston on Thursday. Organizers said the two day event was designed to assist veterans who needed assistance with access to services, including housing, healthcare, and employment. “We want people to come away from this event feeling good about themselves,” Director of Veterans Services Tyrone Smith said. “Feeling good about their opportunities and knowing that others care.” Organizers added that the impact of events like these are felt long after they end. “When I retired from my public service, I just wanted to give back to some of my brothers,” President of New England Helping our Veterans Jim Collins said. Collins said his organization works closely with Stand Down and offers resources for veterans, including furniture and cars. “It’s a chance for veterans to get together,” veteran April Pearson said. “Its community and you can get some help” Organizers are encouraging veterans to take advantage of all resources while they’re available.
