WASHINGTON (NEXSTAR)-- After state election officials raised concerns the U.S. Postal Service is unprepared for this year’s election, Thursday U.S. Postmaster General Louis DeJoy attempted to ease the public’s worries. In a virtual press conference, DeJoy explained starting October 21, USPS will deploy “extraordinary measures” to ensure every ballot mailed on time is counted. According to the plan, there will be dedicated lines for ballot postmarks and drive-thru ballot drop operations and extended operation hours ahead of Election Day including Sunday, November 3. He also adds, beginning October 31 postal workers will be required to check every residential mailbox for outgoing mail. "The U.S. Postal Service is ready to deliver the nation's mail-in ballots,” said DeJoy. In a letter to the postmaster last week, the National Association of Secretaries of States and National Association of Election Directors complained their concerns went ignored. As a result, they say USPS has failed to fix problems that arose during the 2020 presidential election. According to the letter those errors caused “significant” delivery delays and an increase in ballots returned as undeliverable. Asked about the letter, Dejoy acknowledged USPS experienced “some operational issues,” but attributed it to “transitions in some areas” and not the whole country. DeJoy is promising to keep the public updated on USPS operations leading up to Election Day that includes increasing communication with statewide election officials. He is also encouraging Americans to vote early to ensure their ballot is counted.
