WASHINGTON (DC News Now) -- The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) has announced that there will be an increased police presence at schools across D.C. after an anonymous threat was made. In a statement released on Thursday, MPD said that detectives are actively investigating the threat. "We are taking the threat seriously, but at this time we do not believe there is an immediate danger to students or staff," said MPD. Do violence interrupters work in DC? A study hopes to answer that. This comes after school officials said a video circulated on social media that included threats directed at KIPP DC and other schools in the region. A spokesperson for KIPP DC Public Schools told DC News Now that the safety of students, staff, and community is the top priority and school officials are working closely with the MPD to assess the situation. "We encourage all families to be vigilant about monitoring social media and having conversations with your children about the importance of staying safe online. Please also remind your students that any social media posts containing threats or harmful language can result in serious disciplinary action, up to and including expulsion, in accordance with our school policies," said the school in a letter to families and staff. Shots fired, students robbed while standing at bus stop in Prince George’s County, police say In response to the threats, District of Columbia Public Schools (DCPS) also sent the following letter to families and parents: At DCPS, we are committed to ensuring a safe school environment for our students. Communicating about potential security incidents is essential to maintaining strong partnerships with families. DCPS is aware of a dangerous, national social media trend that has resulted in threats being made on multiple platforms targeting various high schools throughout the District. The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) is actively investigating these threats and does not believe there is an immediate danger to our students or staff. Out of an abundance of caution, MPD will increase their presence at schools throughout the District today. In addition, DCPS Police will also continue to support our campuses... We take all threats seriously and ask that families speak with their students and encourage them to report any information they may have regarding threats. The safety of our students is paramount. Thank you for your support as we address this issue. MPD encourages the community to stay alert and to report any suspicious activity to the police immediately. "Your safety and the safety of our youth is our top priority," said MPD. Anyone with information about these threats is encouraged to call 202-727-9099.
