WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - Social media platforms are taking steps to protect teens better. Meta is rolling out a teen account feature that aims to put teens, including those who may lie about their age, into private Instagram accounts. Those accounts can only be messaged, tagged or mentioned by people they follow. The accounts can only be made public with a parent's permission. A Wichita child psychologist says it's about time parents had this tool. "It's really important for the parents to emphasize, like the relationship. So, you know, to sit down with their kids even briefly and say, 'Hey, you know, we're going to we're going to do this with the parental controls,' and then have a dialog about it, to have a conversation about it," said licensed psychologist Dr. Molly Allen. Instagram makes teen accounts private as pressure mounts on the app to protect children The feature has daily time limits and a quiet mode. It also helps to limit who can contact the account holder. Dr. Allen says the changes can help create healthy boundaries for teens. "The emphasis to just be perfect, to look perfect of the perfect, to have the perfect outfit, have the perfect body of the perfect house, the perfect everything, and they end up feeling deficient, and they end up getting depressed because of that or anxious. And it's like they don't even know where that's coming from, you know," she said. The safety feature will take time to kick in. The new feature will be defaulted to teen accounts when they sign up, but it won't be placed on current accounts until next year.
