BATON ROUGE, La. (BRPROUD) - Catholic High (2-0) host U-High (1-1) Friday night in a crosstown showdown at Memorial Stadium. Everybody loves a rivalry and this one is always juicy between Baton Rouge powerhouses. Last year's week three matchup was a barn burner between these two schools. The game was a back and forth affair and came down to the wire. The Cubs kicked a game winning field goal after missing the first 36-yard field goal. They got another opportunity after a roughing the kicker penalty on the Bears. U-High walked off with a 31-30 victory. With emotions high, both teams combined for 266 yards in penalties. The Bears defense sacked quarterback Emile Picarella multiples times and clamped down on the run game, limiting them to just 36 rushing yards. Catholic High breaks winning streak held by St. Thomas More Catholic High School Following that game though, the Bears lost back-to-back games before going on a state championship run earning their first state title under first year head coach Hudson Fuller. Now in his second season, Coach Fuller said the tough loss to U-High was a valuable lesson for his team. "Because of the way our team responded to this game last year, we ended up having the season that we did," said Coach Fuller. "It's not necessarily something that we are, hey last year went this way, and so we've got to do this, this year. It's something that really formed us and was a big learning experience for us. A lot of players on our team that had that experience and are better for it, but not necessarily a focus of revenge or something like that." For more on this matchup, watch the video above.
