NORTHAMPTON, Mass. (WWLP) - The Northampton Board of Health is set to discuss a proposal that would create a generational ban on nicotine products, in an attempt to mitigate the negative health effects of tobacco use. The proposed bylaw would ban the sale of tobacco and vape products to anyone born after January 1, 2024; a group that will turn 21 next year. The ban mirrors one that passed in Brookline earlier this year, which banned the sale of nicotine products to anyone born after the year 2000. The ban was upheld in a ruling by the state's highest court. The Brookline ban paved the way for a number of other cities and towns in the Boston area to pass similar bans. Advocates for the proposal call it the "Nicotine-Free Generation," hoping to wipe out the use of these products. Tobacco retailers, however. In a statement sent to 22News, the New England Convenience Store & Energy Marketers Association said "restricting the free choice of legal products to adults is fundamentally wrong," and that a ban "does nothing to address under-age youth use of nicotine and tobacco products." Thursday's virtual meeting starts at 5:30 P.M. via Zoom
