Quieter weather has returned to New Mexico Wednesday. Storm chances return to parts of the state starting Friday. It was a much quieter day across New Mexico Wednesday afternoon as drier air moves in with a light southwest breeze. Quiet weather will continue overnight tonight with another night of cool temperatures, although it won't be as chilly as what we woke up to this morning. An even warmer day is on the way Thursday. A spot shower or two is possible in eastern New Mexico Thursday, but most of the state will stay dry with a few more clouds. Moisture gets drawn back up into the state Friday, bringing afternoon storm chances to areas along and east of the Rio Grande. Winds will pick up too Friday afternoon across most of the state, with gusts up to 35 mph. A storm system will scrape the state on Saturday, bringing scattered to isolated showers and storms in west-central, northwest, northern, and eastern New Mexico, along with southern Colorado. A couple of these storms could be strong to severe in eastern parts of the state. Winds will also be stronger on Saturday afternoon with gusts up to 40 mph. A cold front will sweep across New Mexico as part of this storm system on Saturday. While drier air will move in behind the front, it will also bring cooler temperatures for the first day of fall on Sunday. Spotty rain chances will return to parts of the state Monday with a backdoor cold front, with rain chances increasing on Tuesday. There is more uncertainty in this part of the forecast, but it would also leave temperatures cooler into the middle of next week.
