HOLYOKE, Mass. (WWLP) - Longtime TV personality and broadcasting pioneer Barbara Bernard left a lasting legacy.
The city of Holyoke paid tribute to the legend herself, Barbara Bernard by dedicating the section of Pine Street that houses the Holyoke Senior Center.
At the Senior Center, Barbara wasn't just famous for her storied past in the communications field, or the many local organizations to which she lent her time and energy.
In 1950, before the Senior Center had even been a thought, she founded the Holyoke Golden Age Club, the first independent club of its kind for seniors in the country.
She dedicated her life to service and advocacy, and some of the people that loved and cherished her most wanted to dedicate something special to her today at the senior center.
"She was always here always did great things here and so that's why we wanted to dedicate this to Barbara Bernard Way. We couldn't name the senior center after her but we figured the Barbara Bernard Way was pretty good," said close and personal friend Patti Devine.
In addition to the dedication ceremony, the senior center donated 500 dollars to the Holyoke YMCA, which was a cause that was near and dear to Bernard's heart.
The club that she founded remains at the Senior Center, with a slight name change -it's now called The Holyoke Golden Senior Club.
