MINOT, ND (KXNET) — Some high schoolers in North Dakota learned about life on the farm since South Prairie School hosted Farm and Home Safety Day. The event is part of Farm and Home Safety Week, which has been around since 1944. Students were able to take part in different stations where they could learn about various topics ranging from livestock to fire and food safety. Each of the stations was being taught by juniors and seniors at the South Prairie School. South Prairie Agriculture Education Instructor Benjamin Seider says the event is a great way for students to learn some important lessons. "It's a way for our chapter to help educate our youth and to get them some useful skills that they can take home and demonstrate," said Seidler. Lack of retirement leads to career gridlock There were demonstrations about food cross-contamination and chemicals that shouldn't be mixed together in the household. The students also got some hands-on experience with livestock to learn about some warning signs to look for in cattle. Seidler said that he wanted to make Farm and Home Safety Day fun for all students, even the ones who may not have a background in agriculture. "We understand that there's a lot of students that aren't gonna be on farms, we tried to brainstorm and come up with things that are pretty universal chemicals, knife safety, food safety are universal things to know fire safety but that they also have applications in agriculture," said Seidler. South Prairie School is planning on having other agriculture events throughout the school year and will have Farm and Home Safety Day again next year. Close Thanks for signing up!
