FORT WAYNE, Ind. (WANE) – As the Spy Run Block House stands stronger after Phase 1 of the Old Fort Reconstruction Project is complete, construction crews turn to Doctor’s Quarters and Hospital Building to begin Phase 2 on Wednesday. The reconstruction project aims to conquer "major repairs" within the 48-year-old landmark. Historic Fort Wayne is continuing to raise the $1.9 million needed for all Old Fort Buildings to be renovated, and has officially secured the finances to commence Phase 2 of the renovations. This development in the reconstruction project comes after the renovation of the Spy Run Block House started in March was completed this month. Construction crews rebuilt the block house's second floor and worked to install steel beams and rigging to the upper roof. Phase 1 of the Old Fort Reconstruction Project costed the organization $300,000. Phase 2 of construction began with the removal of the first-floor windows and door casings of the Doctor’s Quarters and Hospital Building. Historic Fort Wayne is working to maintain and reuse many parts of the buildings, including the windows, shutters, exterior doors, interior partitions and doors, and all hardware. Timber to secure the buildings' structure has been ordered and construction plans to continue once the wood arrives. Tom Grant, Treasurer of Historical Fort Wayne, said the project is projected to be under the $500,000 estimated cost. After construction concludes with Phase 2 and enough funds are raised, Phase 3 commences with the Commander’s Building up for renovations, followed by the Junior Officers building, and finally the Barracks. The Historic Old Fort is located on 1201 Spy Run Ave. For more information about the renovations or to donate to Historical Fort Wayne, visit the organization's website.
