According to NFL agent Brett Tessler, Lions practice squad kicker Greg Joseph is getting poached by the New York Giants and signing to their 53-man squad. Last week, the Lions signed Joseph to their practice squad to help back up starter Jake Bates. There was no indication Bates’ job was in danger—he’s made all of eight of his kicks through two weeks—but general manager Brad Holmes had expressed his interest in adding a veteran kicker since the end of training camp. “We’ll still look at adding another kicker to the practice squad,” Holmes said. “Guy that had a little bit more experience.” Detroit had a veteran kicker in their room at the start of training camp practice, but Michael Badgley unfortunately suffered a season-ending injury during an early camp practice warmup. If the Lions are still interested in adding another veteran kicker, there are still some familiar names out there, including Riley Patterson and Randy Bullock, among others. As for Joseph, it appears he’ll have an opportunity to start for the Giants. Graham Gano, their starting kicker, suffered a hamstring injury on the opening kickoff of Sunday’s game against the Washington Commanders. The Lions now have an open spot on their practice squad. At this point, it’s unclear if the Lions have immediate plans to fill that spot with another kicker or a different position, but those kind of moves typically come on Wednesday ahead of their first practice of the week.
