FRESNO, Calif. (KSEE/KGPE) – Local political experts are weighing in on the rhetoric used by both presidential candidates playing a role in the latest assassination attempt on Donald Trump. “The language we are using, whether it's an advertisement or just the way we talk to each other, this has consequences,” Fresno State Political Science Professor Tom Holyoke said. Political experts and Democrat operatives agree that a national tragedy may have been averted. “That was a blessing, because we certainly don't want any more violence in this campaign,” Fresno County Democratic Party’s Marsha Conant said. A political science professor at Fresno State says the outcome could not be more important in this election cycle. “This election and what is at stake could not be more important,” Vice President Kamala Harris said in a rally. Both candidates held rallies just days after their presidential debate. “And I’m angry about illegal Haitian migrants taking over Springfield, Ohio. You see that mess?” Former President Donald Trump said at a rally in Las Vegas. “Somebody who suggest we should terminate the Constitution of the United States should never again stand behind the seal,” Harris said. Holyoke said that the inflammatory language used by both candidates may have factored into two attempts on former President Trump’s life. “Both campaigns are suggesting or sometimes deliberately saying that the entire future of the United States is on the line,” Professor Holyoke said. Holyoke said it’s important that the rhetoric be toned down, but he is doubtful it will happen - and that it can lead to random violence. “It shows you how careful you have to be about language. For a lot of us, this business about eating the pets in Springfield just sounds so ridiculous. We laugh it off. But now we know that this has actually been leading to attempts at violence in Springfield against, you know, the Haitian migrant community,” Holyoke said. After President Trump was shot in the head nearly nine weeks ago, ads toned down. But only for the blink of an eye. “I think maybe for 24 hours after the first assassination attempt on Trump, people were talking about dialing it back and, you know, looking for common ground. But then no one actually did,” Holyoke said.
