(Kyle Franko/ Trentonian Photo)Expand PRINCETON — Elvis “Kubah” Appiah’s message was a simple one. “We are still Pennington!” said the Red Hawks’ talented senior forward/midfielder from Kumasi, Ghana. Appiah’s response answered a number of questions. Were the Pennington players worried after losing their first game since 2022 Sunday? Was head coach Chad Bridges’ squad still getting used to new roles after graduating seven starters from a team that went undefeated and won the National Championship last fall? Did the Red Hawks think they might have to go to overtime with Mid-Atlantic Prep League rival Hun Wednesday? “We are still Pennington!” Appiah has the confidence every coach loves to see, and he displayed it twice in the final six minutes of the second half yesterday to help the visiting Red Hawks get past the Raiders, 3-1. It was the first loss for head coach Patrick Quirk’s Hun club this season, but had a sting to it since the Raiders had tied the game with 13:45 left in regulation. From there, they saw Appiah change the score 8:08 later, then again with 28.1 seconds to go. “We didn’t do anything special,” Appiah said. “I don’t know that I thought the game was going to go to extra time. We just wanted to keep on playing our game.” That style was hard to dispute since the visitors came out and kept the ball in Hun’s end for the first 20 minutes of the first half before even allowing the Raiders a shot. Then, after having a goal called back because of an offside call with 21 seconds left in the first half, Pennington was first on the scoreboard when senior forward/midfielder Tomas Ludvik banged in a short pass from junior midfielder/back Kyle Harvey 6:21 after intermission. That goal spoiled a tremendous effort by Hun senior goalkeeper Diego Pena, who made 10 saves to keep the game tight. Pena’s teammates changed the momentum when junior midfielder Gonzalo Perez Nunez took a corner kick with 13:45 left. Perez Nunez lifted the ball to senior forward Luke Donahue, who headed the ball back into the center of the box, where junior midfielder Chris Meehan shot another head ball past Red Hawks goalkeeper Topher Kelley to even the score. “We felt good today, especially when we tied it,” Meehan said. “I did think we were going to go to overtime.” Appiah had other ideas when he avoided being offside as senior co-captain Bacary Tandjigora slid a ball ahead from midfield with Pena off his line. Backtracking, Pena did his best to cut off the angle until Appiah stuck a shot behind him and into the net at the last second. Then, with time running out, “Kubah” connected on a pass from sophomore forward/midfielder Matthew Addai to spoil the home team’s hopes of remaining unbeaten. “They came out with a lot of energy in the first half,” Meehan, one of the Raiders’ six members of their leadership council, said of the Red Hawks. “They keep the ball (in their possession) well. They are big and physical and make the midfield run a lot.” In other words, they are “still Pennington!” Pennington(2-1)         0   3    —    3 Hun (3-1-1)                0   1    —    1 Goals: Ludvik, Appiah 2 (P), Meehan (H); Assists: Harvey, Tandjigora, Addai (P), Donahue (H).
