From his native west side to the east side of Oahu, Waianae's Max Holloway will always be willing to give back. On Sunday, the Waianae native was in Kailua to help assist with the opening of former teammate and training partner Martin Day's new Prime Martial Arts gym. All the latest sports news from Hawaii's sports station Camp is well underway for Holloway's next bout, the UFC's featherweight title fight against Ilia Topuria in the UFC 308 headliner in Abu Dhabi on Oct. 26. Holloway is drawing inspiration from John John Florence, who won his third WSL title earlier this month. Holloway noted that when Florence won consecutive titles in 2016 and 2017, Holloway himself was starting his featherweight title run. Despite winning the UFC's BMF belt in spectacular fashion in April the last time he fought, Holloway has not won a featherweight title fight since July 27, 2019. “Camp’s been good. Camp’s been great. I feel good. I feel great. I just can’t wait, you know? I can’t wait until Oct. 26," Holloway told KHON2. "Last time John John (Florence) was a world champion, I got to be a world champ, too. ... He did it first (in 2024), I just gotta follow it.” Holloway will challenge Topuria, who is currently 15-0 in his professional mixed martial arts career. Topuria knocked out incumbent champion Alexander Volkanovski in February, a fighter who owns a 3-0 mark over Holloway. The lead-up to October's fight between Topuria and Holloway was contentious even before the two booked a fight. Topuria has aggressively commented towards Holloway on social media for months. “It is what it is. When you’re chirping and don’t have a fight, that’s one thing. When he was chirping and I was responding, it’s because we never had nothing signed yet. Now he’s chirping, it’s signed. It’s a done deal, brother," Holloway said. "Show up Oct. 26 and that’s where I’ll see you.” Oct. 26 promises to be a memorial day in the Hawaii MMA scene, as Holloway and Kahuku's Dan Ige will fight on the same card for the first time. “I think it’ll be huge," Holloway said. "I had a bunch of these moments with a bunch of my teammates. Me and Martin have fought on cards before, me and Yancy (Medeiros) have fought on some big cards before and got some big wins together. Me and Dan, we used to train together a little when he came out to Hawaii this last trip, so it’s good. It’s always exciting having another Hawaiian on the card and we get to show what Hawaiian MMA is about.”
