WASHINGTON (DC News Now) —The family of Justin Robinson is urging the Department of Justice (DOJ) to open a civil rights investigation into his death. His family is calling on the DOJ to investigate the Metropolitan Police Department's (MPD) practices after police officers shot and killed Robinson on Sept. 1. Robinson's family is also calling for the arrest of the officer who killed him.  PREVIOUS COVERAGE: Protest turns violent after body cam of DC police officers fatally shooting Justin Robinson was released Metropolitan police said when they arrived at the McDonald's on Marion Barry Avenue Southeast, Robinson was unresponsive after crashing his car in the drive-thru. MPD said Robinson was next to a gun in the car.  Shortly after officers arrived, Robinson started moving. That's when D.C. police officers surrounded his car and told him to drop his gun. Police said Robinson allegedly reached for an officer's service weapon, causing officers to fire several rounds, killing him. VIDEO: DC police release body-worn camera footage of officers fatally shooting man The lawyers representing Robinson's family called the shooting an act of "inhumane excessive force.” They said Robinson, fearing for his life, appeared to try to remove the gun from close range of his face when the officer fired several shots into the vehicle. On Sept. 9, MPD released the nearly 19-minute-long body camera video from the shooting. After its release, protests erupted across the District, and groups marched from the MPD's 7th District Headquarters to the McDonald's, where Robinson died. Protesters chanted, “I’m asleep. Don’t shoot,” and told DC News Now that they wanted justice for Robinson. Lawyers said when Robinson was shot, he was wearing his "Cure the Streets" jacket, which is a program he worked for aimed at reducing gun violence. Lawyers plan to hold a press conference outside the DOJ building on Monday afternoon.
