WICHITA, Kan. (KSNW) - What the FBI is calling an apparent assassination attempt on former president Donald Trump is sparking local reaction in Kansas. If the incident is confirmed to be an attempt on Trump's life, it would be the second such attempt in roughly two months. People on all sides of the political aisle said political figures and citizens should not be under threat of violence because of their ideology. U.S. Representative Ron Estes, R-Kan., said on X, "This shouldn't be happening in the United States of America...our constitutional republic works through voting, not through violence." U.S. Senator Jerry Moran, R-Kan. thanked law enforcement officers for acting quickly. Rep. John Carmichael, D-Wichita, called for unity and a fair election. Others also called for de-escalation. "I think it's traumatic for every American to see someone who had such great levels of protection attacked twice," said Rep. Linda Featherston, D-Overland Park. "Political ideology drove a gunman to shoot at the president in July and another to set up shop in what appears to be an attempted assassination over idea," said Mike Brown, Party Chair of the Kansas Republican Party. Brown said political figures should have increased secret service detail to prevent violent events from happening. Meanwhile, Featherston called for more gun control measures. we did reach out to the Kansas Democratic Party and several other leaders on the state and federal level for comment, but they were unavailable.
