RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) -- There seems to be some confusion at the Pipeline Trail -- the City of Richmond said in a recent announcement that it is closing the trail due to ongoing safety concerns, but it was open and people were walking on it Sunday. The uncertainty didn't stop Joy Lamberti and Lester Miller from trying their luck.    "We’ve just started trying to explore different trails and find different places to see in this Virginia area," Miller said. According to city officials, there have been a number of documented safety hazards. Miller and Lamberti were caught off guard when they learned that this part of the pipeline trail along the James River is supposed to be closed.    “But it seems like it’s open," Lamberti said.    The city said in their press release, “the portion of the trail that is the abandoned pipe will remain closed to the public to ensure the safety of all.”   “I still wanna do it," Miller said.    “Oh yeah, we are," Lamberti replied.   The city cautions against any river-goers from traveling to the beach area near the pipe because of safety hazards.   Back in July, sewage near the Pipeline Trail made its way into the water, prompting a water advisory on the James River -- a time Lamberti said she remembers.   “I mean the walk was beautiful but there was sewage, you know, in the water," Lamberti said. The advisory was later lifted on August 1. More than a month later, Lamberti and Miller are still walking in the same area, this time with more caution.   “Very concerning. I hope we don’t encounter anything," Lamberti said. “We can be mindful and be safe with what we’re doing," Miller echoed. 8News has not gotten an update since Friday about the trail. We reached out to the city for clarification or an update about why it was open but haven’t heard back.
