ROCHESTER, N.Y. (WROC) — The University of Rochester’s debate team hosted a watch party for the presidential debate Tuesday night.  About a dozen students and their coach brought snacks to watch what they hoped would be an eventful performance. Many of the students are first-time voters. Some are still too young to vote. They gathered in their debate team room, an area filled with trophies, ribbons, and plaques demonstrating their expertise as debaters. Tuesday they wanted to hear what Former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris had to say about various issues from the environment, abortion, the economy, and immigration.  5 takeaways from the first Harris-Trump debate John Medeiros, a freshman from Hawaii plans to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris.  He says the last debate was tough to watch: “It wasn’t great for the president. He did drop out because of that I think”.   Erin Kent, a junior who serves as co-captain of the Civic Debate Team says she believes the former president did better than the last debate with President Joe Biden. “I think that Donald Trump has composed himself and restrained himself more than the last debate which I think he needed to do.” said Kent.  Most admit they were watching for entertainment purposes or those "gotcha moments," not necessarily to learn any techniques from the candidates. “I feel like if we did anything like they do in our debates we would be removed, “ said Monica Resendez, a junior from El Paso, Texas. These students will be participating in more than a dozen different competitions this school year with teams from Yale, the University of Vermont, and other institutions. They say Tuesday night’s debate while interesting doesn’t compare to how they debate. Kamala Harris’s and Donald Trump’s best and worst debate moments “They have one topic they work through all year creating arguments that they use for and against”, said Assistant Coach Madeleine Fordham.  Fordham explains that the team is made up of students who were debaters in high school and students who didn’t have any experience debating before they joined the University of Rochester’s Debate Union, a championship team.   Those who are planning to vote say the presidential debate did nothing to change their views about the candidates or who they will support in November.
