SHELBY, N.C. – Eight search warrants made public Monday in the case of missing Asha Degree. The little girl disappeared 24 years ago from Shelby. The warrants reveal that investigators now believe that Asha “is a victim of homicide, with her body concealed.” They name Roy and Connie Dedmon as “suspects.” Five properties were searched last week. Four of them are owned by Roy and Connie. Roy’s attorney spoke to reporters on Friday. David Teddy says, “The connection to Roy Dedmon and his family is tenuous at best, and Roy has maintained, and his family has maintained and will continue to maintain, that they’re not involved with Asha’s disappearance and have no information that would help law enforcement figure out what happened to her.” The fifth property is where one of Roy and Connie’s now adult daughters lives. Investigators took a Blackberry cell phone from her Charlotte home and a cheek swab DNA test. Investigators say that a hair found on Asha Degree’s undershirt is a genetic match for this daughter. This daughter would have been 13 when Asha disappeared in 2000. Investigators believe “adult assistance” from Roy and Connie would have been “necessary in the execution and/or concealment of the crime.” Investigators say they’ve also identified DNA from a man named Russell Bradley Underhill. Underhill lived in at least two health care facilities owned by Roy and Connie during the time Asha disappeared. Underhill died in 2004 in Lincoln County. Investigators seized numerous computers, cameras, phones, VHS tapes, some clothing items, floppy disks, CDs, and journals during their searches. They also seized a green AMC Rambler that investigators say resembles the description of a car that witnesses say Asha was “pulled into” on the day she disappeared. Investigators also took DNA cheek swabs from Roy and Connie Dedmon last week. One of the properties investigators searched is a nursing home owned by Roy and Connie Dedmon. There, they seized documents related to Russell Underhill’s care, a photo, 2 earrings and a gray Jaguar.
