HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- The Henrico County Division of Fire ignited a spark in the next generation of first responders today, launching its inaugural all-girls "Girls on Fire" camp. 50 girls are participating in the two-day camp at the Henrico County Division of Fire's drill facility this Friday and Saturday. "I'm saying, boys, get out of the way, it's girl time. And I love it," said camper Lydia Mcaviney. Henrico Fire Lieutenant of Recruit Training Ronnie Martin was the main organizer, alongside Lieutenant O'Neill and firefighter Jasmine Wall. "I wish they had something like this when I was a kid. To watch the young girls have fun while learning about firefighting, that's something that they can turn into an actual profession is pretty cool to me," said Martin. More than 20 firefighters lead campers in hands-on instruction, including general fire safety and the basics of emergency medical services (EMS). The girls split up in teams and learned how to work the water hoses, fire equipment and hazmat procedures. Fire crews showed the campers what is means to be a firefighter in Henrico County. "If this sparks the interest of just one. One young lady to come back when they get done with high school or they get done with college for an opportunity with us here in at Henrico Fire, that's a win," said Henrico Fire Chief Jackson Baynard. This year's Girls on Fire camp is only the beginning. "We know it's something that we got to keep up for next year and we're excited to plan for next year and possibly more to come," said Martin. The final day of the camp is Saturday, July 27, with a few relay races and a big ceremony recognizing all the campers.
