Sundance Mountain Resort and UVU School of the Arts announced today their joint production of Disney’s Musical “Newsies” as the 2024 Sundance Summer Theatre presentation, running from July 18 to August 10. Performances will be on Mondays, Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, with an additional performance on Tuesday, August 6. Tickets are available at https://www.sundanceresort.com/summer-theatre. According to a press release, this year’s production continues a 17-year tradition of partnership between the university and resort. Since 1970, the Sundance Summer Theatre has showcased productions like “Fiddler on the Roof,” “The Sound of Music” and “Wizard of Oz.” “Prime seats are still available for most performances,” said Mari Turner, director of art and programming. “The Sundance Summer Theatre, set amongst towering pines under a backdrop of Mt. Timpanogos, is a magical experience.” “Newsies” is based on the historic Newsboys Strike of 1899 in New York City, and it tells the inspiring tale of both newsboys and newsgirls standing up to powerful publishers to demand fair treatment, according to Sundance Mountain Resort. The musical focuses on the dynamic and rebellious Jack Kelly, who rallies his fellow Newsies in their fight against exploitative newspaper magnates. The Stage Right experience, wherein private groups have a barbecue dinner pre-show in the backstage area, returns for a second season, according to the release. “It is important to the Sundance Catalog to have a presence at Sundance Resort — the birthplace of all things Sundance,” said Kenneth Ragland, COO of Sundance Catalog.
