INDIANAPOLIS — An Indiana native is bringing action, suspense and a story of family loyalty to audiences with the new thriller “Men of Law.”
Karl Letini, director, co-producer, co-writer, actor and composer of the film, recently shared details about the project, including how
the story came together and the challenges of wearing multiple hats during production.
“Men of Law” follows a retired New York City police detective whose teenage daughter is kidnapped while visiting his cousin in a remote area of Texas. When he discovers local law enforcement may be compromised, the two men take matters into their own hands and launch a rescue mission, putting them up against a dangerous human trafficking organization with international connections.
Letini said the idea for the film began with his friend and writing partner, Charles Gargano. The two wrote the screenplay in 2020 with the goal of creating a project they could act in together. Gargano, who was also an actor, died in 2021.
The writing process took place over long-distance phone calls, with Letini based in Austin, Texas, and Gargano living in Los Angeles. Letini said Gargano helped develop the dialogue by improvising conversations and character interactions, which Letini then incorporated into the screenplay.
When developing the thriller, Letini said he looked to successful films for inspiration, particularly those that establish strong relationships between characters before introducing a major crisis.
He said building those connections helps create an emotional foundation for the suspense that follows.
Filming brought its own challenges. The production took place in Texas in November, when unpredictable weather meant temperatures could shift from hot to cold and rainy from one day to the next.
Letini also had to balance his responsibilities as director and actor while keeping the production on schedule.
Working on a low-budget film meant limited opportunities to review footage or shoot scenes multiple times. Letini said preparation and having a clear plan were essential to managing the different roles.
Letini spent much of his childhood in Indiana, moving to New Castle at a young age and later spending time in Bedford after his parents relocated there. He attended Boston University’s film school before spending several years working in the entertainment industry in Los Angeles. He is now based in Texas, where “Men of Law” was filmed.
