Two former Democrats who served as mayors in Summit and Wasatch counties were ahead in their races for state office on election night, but now trail in the latest results. Preliminary results on Tuesday night showed former Oakley Mayor Zane Woolstenhulme and former Midway Mayor Celeste Johnson, both Democrats, leading over the Republican candidates. Yet the results have shifted as more ballots were counted. Woolstenhulme maintained a lead over incumbent Rep. Tiara Auxier in the election for State House District 4, which represents Summit, Morgan and Rich counties, until late in the week. Woolstenhulme had a significant lead in Summit County, earning 5,641 votes, or about 65%, as of Friday morning. That’s compared to Auxier’s 3,052 votes, or 35.1%. However, he otherwise trailed the Republican. Woolstenhulme received 296 votes, or 24.2% in Rich County and 1,014 votes, or 25.1% in Morgan County. Auxier earned 927 votes, or 75.8%, and 3,022 votes, or 74.9%, respectively. In the overall multicounty election, Auxier received 7,001 votes, or 50.2%, and Woolstenhulme collected 6,951 ballots, or 49.8%. With only 50 votes separating the candidates, the results could continue to change as more ballots are counted. A recount is permitted under state law if the difference between the winning and losing candidate’s number of votes is equal to or less than .25%. Johnson, the Democrat candidate for State House District 59, was initially ahead on Election Night. However, the race shifted with new ballot counts released at 5 p.m. on Wednesday. Now, Johnson trails Wasatch County Councilor Luke Searle, the Republican candidate. The former mayor received 8,177 votes, or 49.6%, compared to Searle’s 8,314 votes, or 50.4%. In Wasatch County, Searle received 7,407 votes, or about 56%. Johnson received 5,826 votes, or 44%. Johnson maintained her lead in Summit County, though. She received 2,351 votes, or 72.2%, compared to Searle’s 907 votes, or 27.8%. Meanwhile, incumbent Republican Sen. Ron Winterton secured another term representing State Senate District 20, which includes parts of Summit and Wasatch counties. Winterton received 20,571 votes, or about 63% overall, compared to Forward Party candidate Annette McRae’s 11,990 votes, or 36.8%. The overall results of other state-level elections that appeared on the ballot for some Wasatch Back voters: State House District 23 Incumbent Rep. Hoang Nguyen, a Democrat, appears to have won reelection to State House District 23, which includes a small portion of Summit County. Nguyen received 13,903 votes, or 82.4%. Franklin Robinson, the Republican candidate, received 2,578 votes, or 15.3%. Forward Party candidate Cabot Nelson received 396 votes, or 2.4%. State House District 68 Incumbent Republican Rep. Scott Chew has seemingly won reelection over Constitution Party candidate Sonya Ray for State House District 68. Chew received 9,405 votes, or 84.6%, compared to Ray’s 1,698 votes, or 15.4%. The district includes a small portion of Summit County. State School Board District 1 Incumbent Republican Jennie Earl is poised to win reelection over Democrat Cathy Callow-Heusser. Earl received 45,682 votes, or 66%. The district includes parts of Summit County.  The results are preliminary as of Friday morning. Formal results remain pending certification.
