New Texas Gov.-elect Gina Hinojosa (D) is holding her first press conference since her historic victory over Republican three-term incumbent Greg Abbott. Hinojosa will speak in Austin at 2 p.m. Live video will appear in the player at the top of this screen. She’s already spoken with Gov. Abbott ab out the transition, which will take place over the next two months before she’s sworn in in January. Hinojosa was a civil rights and union lawyer who also served in the Texas legislature. She will speak at the University of Texas, where she graduated; she also served on her son’s school board in Austin. Hinojosa’s win over Abbott was considered a stunning political upset, leading to the state’s first Democratic governor since Ann Richards in 1995 and its first Hispanic gov. ever, part of Democrats’ sweep of every statewide office in Texas on Tuesday, including a U.S. Senate race in which Rep. James Talarico defeated Republican Attorney General Ken Paxton. The AP Voter Poll indicates a substantial shift in Hispanics moving away from Republicans compared with Trump’s victory just two years ago. Nationally, about one-third of Hispanics say they backed the Republican in their local U.S. House race, while roughly 4 in 10 voted for Trump two years ago. Abbott’s campaign outspent Hinojosa’s by tens of millions of dollars, hoping to become the longest-serving governor in state history. Hinojosa was born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley. She had previously promised to fire Texas education commissioner Mike Morath and called for a moratorium and new regulations on data centers. Hinojosa and Talarico’s opposition to Abbott’s push to use taxpayer money to subsidize private schools cemented their reputations as defenders of public education. Texas is home to over 500 data centers thus far, making it the state with the second-most data centers in the country, according to NBC News. ...read more read less
