MOSS LANDING, Calif. (KRON) -- Family members and a youth sports organization are mourning the deaths of two Salinas boys, ages 13 and 15, who were killed when a shooting broke out at a beach party in Moss Landing. Marco Antonio Perez, 15, and Nathaniel "Nate" Flores, 13, were on a beach along Jett y Road when shots rang out just before 2 a.m. Monday, sheriff's officials said. The two homicide victims were pronounced deceased at the scene. Two more gunshot victims were treated at hospitals and survived. The Monterey County Sheriff's Office has released few details about what led up to the tragedy. So far, no suspects have been identified publicly or arrested, and investigators have not released a possible motive. Flores was a member of the Steinbeck Tigers Youth Football team. The sports organization wrote on a GoFundMe page, "Nate was just 13 years old, a member of our Midgets football team, a son, a teammate, and a friend. He would have celebrated his 14th birthday this Friday. His unexpected passing has left his family, teammates, coaches, and our entire Steinbeck community heartbroken." The page continued, "Our players are so much more than names on a roster or numbers on a jersey. They are children we have the privilege of watching grow, encouraging through challenges, celebrating through victories, and supporting both on and off the field. Nate was part of that family, and his loss is deeply felt by all of us." Donations will be given to the boy's grieving family. A second GoFundMe page is raising donations for Perez's family. The page writes in Spanish, "This loss has left his family, friends, and loved ones with immense pain." Perez and Flores were students who attended schools in the Salinas Union High School District. The school district's superintendent asked the community "to be mindful of the impact that speculation or the sharing of unconfirmed information can have on those who are grieving. In moments of loss, the strength of our school community is found in the compassion and care we extend to one another." Anyone with information regarding this shooting is encouraged to contact Monterey County Sheriff’s Detective Sergeant Nick Kennedy at 831-755-3773 or Detective Richard Geng at 831-759-7279. Information can be provided anonymously. ...read more read less
