RICHMOND, Va. (WRIC) — Rep. John McGuire (R) will keep his seat representing Virginia’s 5th Congressional District, defeating former representative Tom Perriello (D), according to the Associated Press. On Tuesday, Nov. 3, voters in Virginia’s 5th Congressional District — which includes part s of Powhatan, Goochland and Louisa counties, among others — decided that McGuire would remain their representative. As of about 11:59 a.m. on Nov. 5, he holds 50.2% of the vote, leading Perriello by a 2-point margin. The result comes after AP went nearly two days without calling the race, despite McGuire declaring victory Tuesday night. Meanwhile, Perriello said shortly after midnight that the race was "too close to call." McGuire's reelection secures his second term in the U.S. House of Representatives after telling 8News he delivered for the district in his first term. On the campaign trail, he highlighted his efforts and plans to address rural health care, expand affordable housing opportunities for first-time homebuyers and lower energy costs. Perriello, who represented Virginia’s 5th Congressional District from 2009 to 2011, outlined plans to raise wages and address concerns surrounding data center development and the proposed Valley Link transmission line. He also told 8News that Americans’ cost-of-living concerns are on the shoulders of President Donald Trump and McGuire, his Republican opponent.
