Democrats secured several major victories in Texas in the 2026 midterm elections, winning not just the U.S. Senate race but also all of the state’s executive races, from governor to railroad commissioner.
Democrat James Talarico won the U.S. Senate race against Republican Ken Paxton and will be the state’s first Democratic Senator since Bob Kreuger, who spent six months in the U.S. Senate in 1993 after being appointed to finish Sen. Lloyd Bentsen’s term when he resigned to become U.S. Secretary of the Treasury.
Gov-elect Gina Hinojosa will become the state’s first Latina governor and the first Democrat to hold the job since Ann Richards left office more than 30 years ago.
It’s a similar story for other state leadership positions, with Democrats winning every other statewide executive race: Vikki Goodwin defeated incumbent Dan Patrick for lieutenant governor; Nathan Johnson won the Texas Attorney General’s race; Sarah Eckhardt won the Comptroller’s job; Benjamin Flores has been elected Land Commissioner; Clayton Tucker will be the next Agriculture Commissioner and Jon Rosenthal will be a Railroad Commissioner.
