HENRICO COUNTY, Va. (WRIC) -- Henrico County Commonwealth's Attorney Shannon Taylor (D) has declared victory over longtime representative Rob Wittman (R) in the race for Virginia's 1st Congressional District, saying she's flipped the district blue.
On Tuesday, Nov. 3, voters in Virginia's 1st Congr
essional District -- which includes parts of Chesterfield, Henrico and Hanover counties, among others -- headed to the polls to choose between challenger Taylor and sitting legislator Wittman.
As of about 11 p.m. on Tuesday, the Associated Press (AP) reports that Taylor has 50.9% of the vote, leading Wittman by a 2-point margin. Notably, the AP has not called this race. However, Taylor sent out a statement declaring her victory after delivering a speech at her watch party.
“From the bottom of my heart, I want to thank every voter, volunteer and staff member who helped power this victory," Taylor said during her speech. "My promise is to fight for every person in Virginia’s 1st District whether they voted for me or not. Tomorrow, we get to work.”
Taylor, who has served as Henrico's top prosecutor since 2012, centered her campaign around lowering costs for Virginians and tackling corruption. She has been very critical of Wittman, telling 8News he has "taken advantage of a corrupt Washington, D.C." during his time in office.
Wittman has served Virginia's 1st Congressional District for nearly two decades since winning his first election in 2007. On the campaign trail, he emphasized his previous accomplishments in Congress, telling 8News he would continue to focus on affordability if re-elected.
All election results are unofficial until certified by Virginia’s State Board of Elections.
